• Deschutes County unemployment rate is 15.9% for April 2009 which equals over 17,000 people are out of work and the number is growing
• Highest unemployment rate of any Oregon Metropolitan Area
• Business closures are exceeding new business startups or expansions
• Mortgage delinquency rates have been rising for the past year
• County property tax delinquencies are at a 10 year high
• County property tax collections are projected to be down over $1 million for 2009
• Annual county payroll has dropped by an estimated $250 to $300 million since third quarter 2008 when it was reported at $2.5 billion
• National transaction data indicates Internet purchasing represents 20% to 30%
• National economy has been in a recession since November 2007
• Local economy has been in decline since June 2007
Campaign Goals: (One Year Campaign or until the Local Economy Demonstrates Solid Improvement)
• Keep local residents employed – You, your neighbor, friend or family member could be the next to be unemployed
• Increase local purchasing by residents, businesses and government entities
• Expand the displaying of Shop Local Campaign identifiers to raise awareness of the value of local shopping
• This campaign is non-partisan – By working together we can help turn our economy around, keeping ourselves or neighbors employed or in business while supporting our local business community
Shop Local Campaign – What Can You Do?
• Send a Pledge Statement to the aforementioned email address. The pledge is a simple statement agreeing to give the local business community “first shot” at your business and doing so prior to going out of the area or using the Internet to make purchases with companies domiciled outside of Deschutes County
• Display the red, white and blue “Yes We Are – Shopping Locally” campaign decal and for businesses add the “Shop Local” tag line to your advertising and do so consistently
• For business and/or community-based organizations: Pledge to increase your local purchasing and either join the “Yes We Are – Shopping Locally” campaign by displaying the decal in your member communications, do articles highlighting the value of local purchasing, what your business or organizations is doing to increase local purchasing, encouraging your members to join the campaign and make the shop local pledge. Or, start your own shop local campaign designed to encourage local purchasing by those within your contact circle
• Purchase for sale or distribution the campaign decal (Bend Signs has a PDF of the campaign decal and has the lowest price to the original request for proposal) Feel free to add your business or organizations name as a “co-sponsor” in the lower right section of the decal
Initial Results:
• 175 people have signed pledge sheets and a half dozen businesses have already joined the campaign
• TV, Radio and Print coverage
